    ESA Commercialisation Days: Space Forum For Green Energy – Highlights

    The third event in the ESA Commercialisation Days series was dedicated to the synergies between the space and green energy sectors.

    More than one hundred participants working at the intersection of space and green energy joined us on April 15 and 16, at ESA HQ in the heart of Paris for two days of panel discussions, keynote speeches, startup pitches and networking opportunities focusing around two key areas:

    • Energy Sustainability: the commercialisation of space-based technologies to help leverage renewable energy in the context of the energy transition.
    • Energy Resilience: the commercialisation of space-based technologies to help ensure continuous and affordable energy supply.

    Highlights from the event.

    Day 1 – Energy Sustainability session

    The event started with:

    • A welcome video from Josef Aschbacher, Director General, ESA – link to the video.
    • An introduction speech from Geraldine Naja, Head of Commercialisation, Industry and Competitiveness, ESA – link to the presentation.

    The opening of the first session focusing on Energy Sustainability featured two keynotes:

    • What are the energy sector’s needs and challenges on the topic of sustainability? Brendan Reidenbach, Policy Analyst, IEA – link to the presentation.
    • How can space assets tackle those needs and challenges? Rita Rinaldo, Head of Applications Projects and Studies Division, ESA – link to the presentation.

    The startup pitches featured:

    In recognition of the quality of the pitch provided, EDInsights AS won the award for “”Space Innovation for the Energy Transition.

    The roundtable discussion brought the following speakers together to discuss the key issues:

    • Beatrice Barresi (moderator), Senior Sustainable Applications Officer, ESA
    • Rainer Malmberg, Business Development Manager, Geospatial Solutions, IABG mbH
    • Jonas Franke, Managing Director, RSS (Remote Sensing Solutions)

    The first day ended with a keynote on SOLARIS by Sanjay Vijendran, Lead for the SOLARIS initiative at ESA– link to the presentation.

    Day 2 – Energy Resilience session

    The second day opened with a keynote from Anthea Comellini AOCS/GNC Engineer, Thales Alenia Space, and ESA reserve astronaut: “How will energy be leveraged for future life in space?”link to the presentation.

    The opening of the second session focusing on Energy Resilience featured three keynotes:

    • What are the energy sector’s needs and challenges on the topic of resilience? Alfonso Martinez-Felipe, Hydrogen Champion for the University’s Centre for Energy Transition, University of Aberdeen – link to the presentation.
    • How can space assets tackle those needs and challenges? Davide Coppola, Head of Space Applications Initiatives Section, ESA – link to the presentation.
    • How can Earth observation support energy resilience? Zoltan Bartalis, Climate Action, Sustainability & Science Department, ESA – link to the presentation.
